Endocrine Surgery Services

My standard approach for all of my endocrine surgical operations is to use minimally invasive surgery (see About). This applies to thyroid and parathyroid operations, as well as to adrenal surgery, where I use laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques. Minimally invasive surgery involves very small incisions, no postoperative drain tubes and often just an overnight stay in hospital. I use a Ligasure thermal sealing device, which precisely fuses and cuts the blood vessels around the thyroid, with no need for ties or sutures inside the neck. In addition, there is very little pain after the surgery, as I use plenty of local anaesthetic and most wounds are only 2 or 4cm long.

All of my patients will also have their surgery performed with an intraoperative nerve monitor, which is used to test and safeguard the recurrent laryngeal nerves (nerves to the voicebox) during your surgery. This nerve monitor minimises the potential risk to the voice to a very low level.

I provide a comprehensive service for privately insured and uninsured patients in the surgery of thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal endocrine disease. My public hospital appointment is at Western Health (Footscray), where I attend a weekly public outpatient session. Bookings to see me there are made through your GP to the Outpatient Department of Western Health (Footscray).

A Note about Fees

Medicare rebates, which determine the payments made to you by your health insurer, have been kept artificially low by the Government for many years. This of course takes no account of the ever-rising costs of running a surgical practice, including wages, office costs and equipment. Unfortunately, this does mean that you will be charged an out of pocket co-payment for your consultations and surgery.

My personal assistant, Natalie, will fully advise you of any charges beforehand and arrange for you to sign a Financial Consent form. If you have any problems with this arrangement, please don't hesitate to discuss it with my personal assistant.
